10 year’s ago when IT and .com boom was flourishing, three of UC Berkeley Economics major friends joined together and prepared to launch an internet business. Despite painstaking planning and preparation, they had to unfortunately fold their vision and dream as a similar internet modeled business already started.
Despite the setback, Hwang and two of his college friends pulled a bit of money together and opened a sofa retail showroom in Culver City which became the start of The Sofa Company.
Like all other businesses, Hwang and his partners faced many challenges and obstacles. Hwang and his partners turned these challenges to motivation and tirelessly marketed their company and products, including passing out fliers around the neighborhood daily. These determined efforts resulted in increased sales and in 2001, the company met its 3-year goal of exceeding the break-even point and generating net profit.
Hwang also actively leads public relations and marketing by sponsoring HBO TV series, Entourage” for the last several years and advertising in LA Times Weekend Editions.
With fervent efforts of its owners and staff, the customers visiting Santa Monica showroom increased continuously. Currently, the company manufactures and sells 500 pieces of sofa and chairs monthly. The newly opened Pasadena showroom is also growing in sales.
Hwang states that the partners are planning and preparing for their bigger dreams. Foremost, opening a showroom in Downtown LA where newly designed and built condos and lofts is a key strategic initiative for the company. Projected to attract more of younger generation occupant, Downtown LA location became Hwang and his partners’ next expansion.
