What is Alder and where does it come from?

 Common Alder   Alder Plank sample

Alder is a member of the Birch tree family. It’s considered a cousin to both the Birch and Hazel tree. Alder grows in wet soils in humid, cool temperate regions. It is a native of Europe, North America, and Asia. It is locally naturalized in South Eastern Canada and North Eastern United States, due to the common wet climates over the northern hemisphere. Alder is naturally harder and heavier therefore making it ideal for furniture construction. With alder wood frames, furniture will feel more stable and substantial.
