What is Memory Foam?

What does ILD or IFD stand for?

ILD = Impression Load Deflection

IFD = Impression Force Deflection

ILD and IFD are interchangeable and represent the firmness of foam products.

How do you measure the ILD of flexible foam?

ILD is measured by taking a disc and pressing it evenly into the foam.  The amount of weight required to push the foam down 25% of its height is valued as the ILD rating.  A higher ILD means the foam is stronger and firmer.

How do you measure the support ratio of polyurethane foam?

The support factor of foam is taken by the ratio of 65% ILD and diving it by 25%.

While the support of foam is not dictated only by density, the higher the density, the greater the support.
