What are green alternatives to foam?

Unless you specified otherwise, polyurethane foam will most likely be used in your furniture cushions. Though polyurethane foam is highly recyclable and reusable, it is still not a green product. A green alternative to polyurethane foam is using soy-based foam. Unlike the traditional polyurethane foam, soy based foam is made with soy polyols in place of petroleum based polyols. Though the soy foam is not 100% green, it still gives us a healthy and natural choice in how our furniture ultimately affects our environment. (See Soy Foam article)
Another alternative would be a Kapok fill. Kapok is a tropical tree that produces pods that are harvested and are processed into a think silk like fiber. The process of harvesting and separating the fiber is labor- intensive and manual. If it difficult to sping, but is used as an alternative to down as a filling in mattresses, pillows, and upholstery pieces. The fiber is light, very buoyant, resilient and resistent to water. It is hypoallergenic and is a renewable source. Thought Kapok fill has been used for years, it is only suitable for decorative pillows due to its highly flammable properties.
