Evolution of down seat cushions
The first furniture upholstered was most likely leather, stretched on a frame without padding. Though down fills have been used in pillows and blankets, the use of down fill in seat cushions was not common until paired with the use of springs. At first, the spring and down padding pair worked great. It wasn’t until the springs wore out, broke away from its restraints, and pushed through the thin down padding. The use of foam cores in place of springs resolved this problem providing the down wrap a solid core where no matter how much wear wouldn’t cause any ripping or tears in the down envelope.
Feather and down offer the maximum comfort and softness in cushions and pillows that most people desire and designers prefer. Feather and down back pillows and wrapped seat cushions can always be "fluffed up" to maintain their look. Though down wrap cushions were highly desirable for their level of plush comfort, they require a little more maintenance and are not hypoallergenic. For hypoallergenic alternatives to down fills, polyester fiber blends are available such as the Dacron and Premium fills.
