What is the purpose of corner blocking frames?

Corner Block diagram

Corner blocking is a furniture building technique where a corner block (typically wood) is wedged, screwed or glued in at a corner of a furniture frame to ensure stability. Corner blocks help keep legs or frames from ever wiggling. Details like this are found in all well made furniture.
